Blogger & Moe’s Ambassador Sydney Socias Speaks on Building the Life You Want

October 2, 2019

Sydney Socias is a successful lifestyle blogger who, essentially, created her now-famous platform from a school project. She began her blog to fulfil a university requirement but eventually it morphed into what is now her career. Sydney uses her platform to remind us that what you see on the internet is often not a real representation of life behind the screen. Life isn’t perfect, but it is what you build it to be. She takes her own advice to heart, turning her home into a mecca with Moe’s furniture and accessories.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in your career?

Sydney Socias: “I’ve been blogging for five years, I started in University when I did a degree in marketing that was heavily focused on social media. We were encouraged to start a blog. After graduating, I started working in a Vancouver advertising agency. Eventually, I rebranded the blog and turned it into The Working Girl. I never thought I would be able to support myself with it.”

The Working Girl

Sydney tells us she had dreams of climbing the corporate ladder and becoming a VP in the marketing industry. She initially intended her blog to be a visual portfolio following her throughout her career. It quickly morphed into a lifestyle platform with multiple directions, including home style and fashion, career tips, blogging advice, beauty, skincare, and a whole realm of other things.

Once it became profitable, Sydney left her agency career to pursue it full time.

SS: “I named it The Working Girl to use it as a visual portfolio as I went through my career. Now, it has evolved into a way of thinking, a philosophy of life, if you will. Our world today is crazy and busy — we get so many messages every single minute, it’s easy to get caught up in things like Instagram and all the noise that comes with spending time on an app. With my blog, I try to get back to the notion that you can build whatever life you want but it’s important to look within yourself and tune out the outside noise, to take every day as a new opportunity to build what you want and what you see for yourself.”

What brought you to Moe’s in the first place?

SS: “I always knew Moe’s had great pieces… After reaching out, the Moe’s team came in to meet me and I feel like the new direction they’re going in aligns really well with my brand and my aesthetic. I met with [Moe’s] a few times, saw their catalogue and where they’re looking to go. I love what they’re doing. The timing was right, the opportunity to work with them is very unique. Because of the way they’re pushing forward, I think it’s a really great fit.”

Sydney elaborates on her selective process for working with brands.

SS: “I want to have the opportunity to speak to that brand throughout my content for the whole year. For me, it’s not like “I’m going to do this with you and that’s where the buck stops” I’m much more interested in long term relationships where we can build our partnership and see where it takes us.

She also mentions that the opportunity to work with Moe’s is exceptional as the home department of her website is her number one vertical.

SS: “I like to think of my blog as an online digital magazine. Now, when I look at my numbers, home is my number one vertical and although I wouldn’t call myself an interior designer, my home has become a big part of my story.”

What do you find to be the most rewarding part of what you do?

SS: “The most rewarding part is speaking to the girls who want advice — my community is relatively small but were all like-minded. The female audience has been really supportive with reaching out. With kids now, and all this technology surrounding them, you think it would be easier but it’s almost more challenging now to make those connections.

Being able to give back to my community is great, if I’m getting perks, I want them to get perks. It’s also really rewarding having huge brands trust me with their messaging.”
